Friday Shuffle, round 2 of 3: two colleagues in a 1:1 chat while others wait for the next shuffle

How your weekly Shuffle works

Random pairs. Short chats. Every week.

  1. Everyone joins.

It’s already in everyone’s calendar, with a reminder just before. Nothing to install.

  2. We shuffle.

Everyone’s paired at random for a one-to-one video chat. Alice gets Steve.

  3. to

    Talk about anything but work.

A few minutes each, then a fresh shuffle. Steve, then Maria, then Tom.

Steps 2 and 3 repeat for each round.

  4. Back to work.

Alice knows three more people by name. Nobody arranged a thing.

Matching apps: a week of messages, then nothing.

  1. Mon

    Matchbot App 9:00

You’ve been matched with Steve. Arrange a coffee this week.

  2. Tue

    Alice 11:42

    Free Thursday?

  3. Thu

    Steve 16:05

    Slammed, sorry. Next week?

  4. Mon

New match. Alice and Steve never met.

Why it matters

Where did the small talk go?

Remote work is great at planned conversations. The unplanned ones, where people get to know each other, don't happen unless someone makes time for them.

You feel it most with:

  • New starters: they meet the people they need for onboarding, while the rest of the company can stay unfamiliar.

  • Teams that never cross paths: marketing talks to marketing, product talks to product. People can work at the same company for years without properly meeting.

  • Remote and hybrid colleagues: the work conversations still happen. The chats before, after and between them often don't.

ShuffleDesk makes that time, once a week.
  • How was your weekend?

    By the kettle

  • No way, you're into climbing too?

    In the lift

  • Ooh, that looks good. What did you get?

    In the lunch queue

  • Just waiting for a couple more to join… how's the new puppy?

    Before the meeting starts

  • Did you catch the game last night?

    On the way in

For People and Ops teams

See your company getting to know itself.

Every pair of colleagues who've talked counts as a connection. The number only goes up, and each session shows how many it added.

  • Session reports: how many joined, how many new connections were made, and a one-click reminder for everyone who missed it.

  • Impromptu Shuffles: start one on the spot for an all-hands, an offsite or a Friday afternoon.

  • In everyone's calendar: a recurring invite and a reminder before each session, so people actually turn up.

Check-ins

Don't just measure belonging. Build it.

Survey tools can tell you people feel disconnected, then leave you to fix it. ShuffleDesk gives people the time to actually talk, and its check-ins show you whether it's helping.

  1. People Shuffle every week, meeting colleagues outside their usual circle.

  2. Now and then, a 30-second check-in: three quick statements about feeling connected, and whether Shuffles are helping.

  3. You see the trend, week by week, as team averages. Never one person's answers.

Optional. Off until you turn it on.

Privacy

What's said in a Shuffle stays in the Shuffle.

Video goes person to person

Calls connect directly between the two browsers. Nothing is recorded, and there's nothing to install.

You see who, never what

Admins see totals, not who joined or who met whom. Never what was said, or anyone's own rating or feedback.

Check-ins stay anonymous

Answers only ever show as team averages, and only once enough people have answered.

Not the one who decides?

Bring ShuffleDesk to your team.

They'll see it's from you. We won't email them again unless they sign up.

Questions

What People teams ask first

Do people have to take part?
No. Everyone gets the invite and joins when they can. Anyone can leave a chat whenever they like.
How long does a Shuffle take?
You choose how many chats and how long each lasts. Three short chats take 20 minutes, breaks included.
Isn't this time away from work?
Yes, on purpose. A Shuffle takes 20 minutes, once a week. It's time your company sets aside for people to get to know colleagues beyond the ones they work with every day, just as it makes time for an all-hands or a team social.
How are people paired?
From whoever's there, favouring colleagues who haven't met yet, and those who share a language.
What do we need to install?
Nothing. It runs in the browser on any laptop with a camera, alongside Slack, Teams or whatever you already use.

Your first Shuffle could be this Friday.

Pick a slot, invite your people, and watch the connections add up.
